Dawn and Emily’s Day Out

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

What a day we had yesterday! We started off with a friend’s birthday party at the zoo, then ended up at Fort Edmonton. The girls were exhausted after their day, but they had a wonderful time!
Once a year, the City of Edmonton opens its doors to the general public and offers most of it’s facilities [...]

Find Words that Begin With…

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

When your child has learned the alphabet and its sounds, it’s time to beging forming words. This set of worksheets is a great way to indirectly introduce research skills.

Choose a letter and give the corresponding page to the child. Ask the child to find words that start with that letter. He might look through books [...]

101 Reasons #12: Immediate Feedback

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

When dealing with only one or a few children, like in a homeschool setting, the child is able to get immediate feedback on his/her work. There is no waiting a day, or several days to find out if they understand the materials or not. Parents can follow their children’s progress closely and constantly give feedback [...]

Moving Towards Unschooling

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

In my ever-continuing quest to move towards unschooling, I stopped making so much emphasis on Dawn’s work and found ways to encourage her in more active play. Unfortunately, my daughters don’t have too many opportunities to play with other children because I don’t get out very much. Thanks to the dayhome and some new neighbors, this [...]

Dayhome is Up and Running

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

After tons of cleaning, re-organizing and baby-proofing, I was able to finally open up my dayhome this past Monday. I have one little girl coming on a semi-regular basis, with appointments to meet other families shortly.
Living in a two-bedroom apartment, it’s hard to find the place to accomodate a dayhome, but with a little creativity, [...]

Pink Level: Word Lists Writing Practice

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Simply put, I’ve uploaded the pink level word lists formatted in a way that the child may trace over each word as he learns them. Once the child has finished with a specific word list, you may give him the corresponding one in this set as writing practice and to reinforce what has been learned.
Cut [...]

Pink Level: Sentence Strips

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The final “installment” in the Montessori pink reading level is the sentence strips.
Once the child has mastered reading phrases, it’s time to move on to these simple sentences which act as a springboard for further reading.

The sentence strips are available here.
