Welcome to our journey!

By Laura | September 3, 2008

The great thing about homeschooling is that the opportunities for learning are endless. I’d much rather my daughters learn to add and subtract from payng for somthing at the supermarket than in a book. Real-life experience helps people to learn without even realizing it!

While I do use a curriculum now (for Dawn), I plan to move over to unschooling as she gets a little older.

Yesterday, they had a ball spreading cheese onto their bread. Dawn had never shown any interest in doing it herself until then, and when I handed her the knife, bread and cheese, she was ecstatic! Emily, not wanting to lose out on the experience, quickly followed suit!

I found that ‘practical life’ (from Montessori) is always one of my children’s favorite activities – we don’t ‘work’ at home as in a Montessori classroom (it would be too constraining) but we encourage our children to be very independent at home – the 2 and 3.5 year old set the table, clear their own dishes (yes, a few accidents have occured!), etc. When I bake (twice a week or so), they are very keen to help me, and the mess is surprisingly small. We count together how many cups of this and that, etc, so you are right, learning from ‘real life’ is much better than learning from books.

Yup, I love practical life! Now that we’re fully settled in from our move, I want to start giving my children more practical life opportunities.

Dawn is at that age where she wants to help in the kitchen, I’m trying to think up ways to let her get more involve and am thinking of allowing her to cut the vegetables for the salad.
