Watching my girls learning through play…
By Laura | October 19, 2008
After getting home from the science museum and having a lovely dinner, I started unpacking some stuff that my parents brought down from New Brunswick. These are things that I had left behind because I didn’t have the space to bring it with me last year. In it was a large set of flash cards that I had made while living in Saudi Arabia.
The girls started spending time playing with them. Dawn would bring a card to grandma and tell her what the letter was. Emily tried to do the same but wasn’t as successful at getting her letters right! She figured that she was better with her colours, so started playing the “what’s this colour” game with the colour-cards.
After a while, Dawn started collecting the colour-cards and the counting beads. She laid the cards on the couch and started matching the beads with the cards. I had nothing to do with it–honest!!! It was just a precious moment to show how kids really do enjoy learning through play. It encourages me to keep pushing towards an unschooling lifestyle.
We started discussing homeschooling and I’m happy that my parents seem to see my point of view in regards to home education…either that or they are REALLY good at hiding their own feelings. They see how much the girls are progressing and I hope that it helps them to understand the reason we chose that path of study.
