Back to the Grind

by Laura

We are finally (sort of) settled in and the girls are really getting impatient about starting up their schooling again. I can’t say that I blame them…it’s been way over 4 months and they seem to love doing traditional bookwork!

I’ve been trying to get out daily or almost daily with the girls to take advantage of the nice weather. Winter will come around quickly enough and I don’t know how often I’ll be able to take them out. Since getting from the LRT (light rail) to the front door is an uphill climb, adding in snow and sleet might make things really hard…I guess relying on adapted transit is in my near future.

We went to the downtown library yesterday. With time to kill before picking up some paperwork, I took advantage of the time and let the girls do some exploring. They are busy renovating the children’s area and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! Dawn misses the listening station where you can put on headphones and listen to songs or a story. Maybe they’ll plan more than one set of headphones.

This morning, we hit the Londonderry Library for a special program for 3-5 year olds called “Digg This!”, all about dinosaurs. Dawn loved it and had a great experience! It took Emily a long time to warm up for the occassion…actually, it took most of the time there and she refused to enter until near the end. I’m hoping that next time she’ll be more willing to get involved.

The girls have discovered the computers! Dawn took to the games (Jump Start) like a pro, while Emily practiced mouse basics with the toddler version.

Emily has been showing an interest in maps, pointing them out whenever she sees them and wanting to know what different markings on them are (such as the blue line, which is a river). I printed off some worksheets while at th library and checked out a bunch of books on maps and basic geography skills. This will officially be our first exploratory study together! I’m curious as to how much of this Emily will soak up.
