Annual NOT Back to School Picnic

by Laura

Yesterday was HLSA‘s annual ‘NOT Back to School Picnic!’ A fun time was had by everyone as families came together to chat about plans for the months ahead and to give their children a chance to play and explore in Edmonton’s River Valley. I have the full intention of signing up for membership with them (they seem like an awesome local organization!)–I just need to wait until the end of this month for my cash-flow to free up.

The highlight of the day for many of the kids was the fallen tree that was discovered. It provided a whole afternoon of entertainment, fellowship and discovery for these guys!

Dawn and Emily both had a great time! Dawn is slowly showing a greater sense of independence by moving away from me to play with less and less time spent before she does so. She still doesn’t like to interact with other people, but I’m hoping that this will be resolved with more opportunities to play with other children. She enjoyed herself by playing on the slide and in the sand with other children. She got on the swing by herself for the first time (sitting, not on her tummy) and had her first disagreements with some boys over wanting to go down on her tummy (they told her no, it wasn’t safe!).

Emily spent time digging in the sand with a stick and watching as the other children played together. She’ll get close to them to listen and watch. I hope that she gets the courage to start speaking with them soon!
