The Life and Trials of an Adult Unschooler

After my return from the library with my two daughters and a backpack full of books, I realized that in my own journey, I’m no different different from them.

I have two other blogs that have just taken off: Laura’s Cool Stuff and Personal Development for Lazy People, and need to learn new marketing techniques to drive traffic, as well as how to set up and maintain the Joomla CMS for another site that will be launching soon: Bananga.com. In light of this need for knowledge, I don’t look up the latest continuing education courses offered by the local colleges. Instead, I head to the library.

Is this any different than directing our own children to learn what they need, when they need? Why can there be only be children unschoolers? I believe that anyone who uses their own resources to acquire knowledge instead of being spoon-fed is a lifelong learner.

The challenge however, is balance. When should I take time for myself to work on the projects that I should dear, as opposed to spending the time with my children? I found that for now, I need to sit and learn while we are together at the same place, so that I may take constant breaks to help them out with something they need or participate in a craft with them.

I also need to find balance in keeping the home in some semblance of order. My constant companion has been my little planner in which I can list my daily to-dos. This allows me to keep track of what needs to be done, and what I’ve completed. There are some awesome notebooks available here on Amazon, btw.

What about you? Are you a lifelong learner?
