10 Free or Inexpensive Homeschool Options

by Laura on February 6, 2010

  1. Robinson Curriculum
While not entirely free, the Robinson Curriculum is more than worth the small investment. For $195, you get an entire curriculum covering grades 1-12 on 24 CDs. The only thing not included are the math textbooks, wherewith Saxon Math is the official recommendation.
There are a few used copies available here for as little as $80.
  2. Ambleside Online
If you are interested in a Charlotte Mason education, this site has a free online curriculum, support groups and links to most of the required books.
  3. eFantasmic
The developers of this site tout themselves as ‘for homeschoolers by homeschoolers.’ For $130 a year, you get unlimited curriculum downloads. You can also purchase by the month if you wish to give it a try first.
  4. Local Library
Your local library is a treasure trove of information. From books and encyclopaedias to DVDs and targeted programming, you can find materials that last for a lifetime of learning. Find unit studies or worksheets online and then check out the related books from the library.
  5. School Board
If you are living in an area that is friendly towards homeschoolers, consider approaching your local school board to borrow extra textbooks. What they might have available might be slightly outdated or considerably damaged, but is a good way to use “approved” curriculum at minimum cost.
  6. Homeschool Your Child for Free
This is an awesome book with over 1400 free resources online for homeschooling yoru children at little (still gotta pay for paper and toner) or free. The price is great and more than worth the money (I use my own copy all the time!). Book was updated in 2009.
  7. Old Fashioned Education
Tons of wonderful resources listed here.
  8. BBC Schools
Home of a near-complete UK curriculum.
  9. Columbia Education Centre
Literally thousands of lesson plans on all subjects. Listed by subject and grade.
  10. K-12 core lesson plans
Another great site that has archived hundreds of lesson plans by subject and grade.

Do you have any good free/low cost curriculum resources that you’d like to share? Please leave them in the comments section.
