The girls had a great afternoon together, though J was a little shy at first and didn’t want to leave her mom’s side.

They played with the toys and have fun climbing up and down on the bed. We made egg salad sandwiches–a first for J and her mother, adding another recipe to their cooking arsenal.

True to her character, J did not want to leave when it was time to go home and showed her displeasure with lots of tears!

Sherri came over with her two little ones last Friday and we spent the afternoon building gingerbread trains. I had found some kits on clearance at Safeway and thought the kids would enjoy putting them together.

It’s been a nice week and we are slowly picking up the pace. While I strongly support the unschooling movement, I sometimes worry that my daughters may not be getting what they really need. Or rather, I wonder whether they’re getting the basics they need to take off on their own.

With that in mind, I’m thrilled that my girls love using workbooks and am trying to get a little ‘book learning’ in while they are interested. I bought a small set of plastic drawers from Superstore. There are four in all, so one for each of the girls’ current books, and then the others for the masses of paper they are constantly collecting.

There’s a new homeschooling family in town and I invited them to join us for the New Years Eve festivities. Turns out that they were already planning on going, so we made arrangements to join up! It was a great evening and the girls had a blast.

My little shutterbug!

My little girls are born artists. They are like me in that they can’t pass by any form of artistic medium without having to have a go at it. This definitely includes cameras.

Since they were old enough to talk, both Dawn and Emily have constantly begged me to use my cameras. I have two of them: a Canon XSi and a Sony Cybershot. I’m not willing to let them use my Canon (and it’s nothing personal–I won’t even let my closest friends use it), but I’ve increasingly allowed them to use my Cybershot.

At what age should children be allowed to start experimenting with cameras?

As soon as they have an interest.

With digital technology, we no longer need to purchase film and pay to process pictures. Children can take as many pictures as the battery life and memory card allow, and easily weed out the ones they don’t want.

Durability. Cameras are now being designed for children in mind. For about $20-$100, you can buy a camera specifically designed for children that can withstand shock and wear and tear.

For a child, taking photos allows them to show their friends and family how they view the world. Kids often see things quite differently than us–they see things that we have pushed out of our minds as being unimportant or inconsequential. Let them embrace these small treasures.
