When I was teaching Montessori in the Middle East, The Very Hungry Caterpillar was a big favourite. Its simple, yet appealing text was a take off for so many lessons, from counting and nutrition, to science and nature–with art in between!

Snuggle up with your young children with a mug of hot chocolate (yes, there’s snow here already!) and explore the wonderful world of the Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Speedlinking is when a blog provides resources and links to enable readers to easily access good, USEFUL information on a given topic.

1. Start by reading the story together. This is a good story with which to practice comprehension and attention span. After a few reads, you should be able to leave off the last few words of each sentence, then have your child fill in the blanks.

2.Play! Below you will find links and resources for your children to further explore the world of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. You don’t need to do them all, pick and choose the ones your child will enjoy best! Remember that learning should never be forced!

Listen/Watch the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

You can listen to Eric Carle (the author) read the story here.

Or watch the story illustrated here on YouTube:

Age range: 3-8 years.

Mermaids are wonderful imaginary creatures that have inspired stories from many cultures. Children love fantasizing stories about mermaids, so I thought it befitting to create a unit study for this purpose.

This is not a curriculum, it’s a set of resources that you can use to help your children discover mermaids. Since mermaids are fictional beings, it’s difficult to find useful information to put a comprehensive unit study together on it.

Some of the info here is geared to adults. It’s up to you to tell them about mermaids in an age-appropriate way, and to explain the difference between real and fictional.

WARNING: The graphics in some of these links may contain partial nudity, so please review the pages before allowing your young children to see them.
